T.O. Souryal, M.D. is
recognized as one of the world’s foremost authorities on
anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and treatment, and
is one of the nation’s few orthopaedists dedicated solely to
the practice of sports medicine. Graduating from the
University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio in 1982,
Dr. Souryal completed an orthopaedic internship at Parkland
Hospital in Dallas, then elected to pursue additional
training in sports medicine by studying under some of the
biggest names in the field.
Upon his return to Dallas in 1987, Dr. Souryal launched his
private practice and was an assistant team physician for the
Dallas Mavericks. In 1992, he was asked to serve as the Head
Team Physician, a post he has held for 8 seasons. In
addition to his work with the Dallas Mavericks, he has held
similar positions with other professional teams including
the Dallas Burn (Major League Soccer), the Dallas Freeze
(Central Hockey League), and the Dallas Texans (arena
football). In 2004, Dr. Souryal was one of a handful of
orthopaedic surgeons hand-picked to serve on the NFL
Players’ Association’s Board of Neutral Physicians, for
which he assesses the short- and long-term medical needs of
retiring NFL athletes.
Dr. Souryal has developed revolutionary treatment protocols
that have made headlines within and beyond the medical
community and, as a clinical professor at the University of
Texas Southwestern Medical Center in the departments of
Orthopaedic Surgery and Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation, he continues to advance the practice of
sports medicine as a distinct specialty within the field of
orthopaedics.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Souryal hosts a weekly
show for ESPN Radio called “Inside Sports Medicine” that
airs in Dallas, Chicago, Miami and northern California, with
plans to expand nationwide. Additionally, his book, The
Weekend Warrior’s Guide To Sports Injuries, is being
published by M. Evans and will be released in 2006.
He established the Texas Sports Medicine Foundation in 2005
after a 15-year relationship providing pro bono medical care
and treatment to economically disadvantaged student athletes
at Wilmer-Hutchins High School in Dallas.
